MoonPay turns ChatGPT research into a crypto checkout path

A buy button inside ChatGPT matters less for today's revenue than for where the transaction starts.

Users can do conversational research inside ChatGPT, then the MoonPay app generates a direct checkout link within the chat window for Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC. For repeat users, the path shortens further: verified customers can sign in to their existing account and use a previously saved payment method. That is the core appeal-keeping research and purchase initiation in the same surface.

The catch is that the link still redirects to the MoonPay website to finalize the transaction, and users must still complete MoonPay's standard KYC verification. So the integration looks like a real friction reduction, but not a fully contained in-app purchase flow.

How MoonPay fits OpenAI's broader commerce strategy

OpenAI is leaning toward routing, not retail

That crypto buy button fits a larger pattern: OpenAI is shifting its commerce effort toward merchants that build inside ChatGPT rather than selling products through its own checkout. The company moved toward retailers' ChatGPT apps after scaling back plans for direct ChatGPT checkouts, and about 100 firms have built ChatGPT apps.

In that framework, MoonPay is not a random payments add-on. It is another vertical using the same app distribution layer.

Walmart shows what a more complete flow could look like

Walmart is the clearest comparison for where this could go. Its partnership uses Instant Checkout to let users chat and buy inside ChatGPT, and Walmart describes the shift as agentic commerce in action. That is the more complete version of the thesis: conversation turning directly into an order.

But the gap between concept and scale still matters. Even with more third-party integrations, only Instacart currently enables checkout within the ChatGpt app. Having many partners is not the same as having many monetized transaction paths.

What would prove the thesis now

The setup is clear. The unanswered question is whether real transaction flow is forming.

Watch completion, not headlines

The broader risk is familiar from OpenAI's commerce push. The company shifted toward retailers' ChatGPT apps, but users may still view the product mainly as a research and chatting tool, may not know which apps exist, or may follow links to a merchant's website instead of finishing the purchase inside ChatGPT.

The benchmark going forward

Walmart's Instant Checkout is the clearest benchmark for what a smoother chat-to-checkout experience should look like. Until similar behavior shows up more broadly, MoonPay is best treated as an early routing test rather than proof of durable commerce revenue.
